The Eclipse

This show does a really good job of pulling you into the story and making you interested in more than just the romance. This was surprising because high school romance is so common.

There is a lot to like about this show. Watching each character struggle with their personal opinions vs their academic reputations and how each of them comes to terms with the fact that change is necessary for growth.

The main story follows Aye. A new student to the Suppalo all-boys private school. Who has enrolled with the sole purpose of finding out what the school and its harsh ruling system had to do with his uncle's suicide.

You'll get to see into the lives of each of the members of the prefect team, a small group of the student body who is in charge of enforcing the rules of Suppalo, and how they each handle it when three students start to protest the way the school handles non-conformity. Challenging everyone's views on individualism and the human rights of children.

All the while, a long-rumored curse returns to the school. Punishing those that dare to disobey. This element of the story was the most interesting in my opinion though it fell a little flat toward the end. I spent most of the time I watched this show curious about who was behind the curse and their motivations. While the reveal was expected by the time they got to it, it was done well. My issue with it is what comes after. There wasn't much follow-through to the motivation or WHY it started in the first place because you get the feeling that it came from an outside source which isn't ever touched on.

Now the only problem I had with this show was the way Aye's character is with Akk. The main anti-hero/head of the prefect club. Aye spends every interaction with Akk flirting as a means to make him angry, which is initially charming. Though, over the course of the show, it is obvious that Akk has started to fall for Aye. Aye's feelings for Akk, however, never feel genuine to me. He always seems to have some motivation behind his interactions with him. He repeatedly pushes Akk to do things he's clearly not ready to do. Using manipulation and even gaslighting to get him to confess his feelings, to tell the students a secret he's been keeping, and to come out.

Even going so far as to reveal their relationship to Akk's parents without confirming first with him that it's okay and while it can be argued that he didn't "out" him to them ... It still isn't Aye's place as the boyfriend to go oh btw I am dating your son, is that okay? I really hated that Aye as a character never got to be anything but antagonistic. He had the potential to be far more playful. Especially when starring opposite of someone like First and how he brought Akk to life. I am sad we didn't get to see more of them actually enjoying being together as a couple and not just being more of Aye trying to make all of Akks' decisions for him.

The best thing about this show though? Neo's role. Not once have I ever seen him play anything other than comedic relief. He's always been the over-the-top funny guy and in The Eclipse you see him play a very serious member of the perfect club. His journey to finding himself and admitting his feelings is beautiful. I hope that in the future we get to see Neo and Louis as the main couple with a good emotional story. I know they would both kill it

8/10
